Signs Your Abloy Deadbolt Installation Is Failing

• Key rotation feels gritty or requires force. The disc detainer mechanism inside an Abloy cylinder uses rotating discs instead of pins. Dust and pollen from Marietta’s heavy spring seasons work into the cylinder, mixing with the factory lubricant to form a paste that binds the discs. We disassemble the cylinder, ultrasonic-clean the disc pack, and relubricate with Houdini Lock Lube - never graphite, which cakes in humid air.
• Bolt extends fully but won’t retract without jiggling. The actuator cam between cylinder and bolt mechanism has worn a flat spot, or the bolt itself has bent from repeated over-torque. • Key works in warm weather, sticks in cold. Thermal contraction of the door metal or vinyl cladding changes the cylinder alignment against the bolt housing. DIY or Call Us?

An owner can safely check two things: the backset measurement and whether the strike plate sits flush. Beyond that, Abloy deadbolts present two genuine hazards. The disc detainer cylinder requires a specialized follower tool to prevent disc spring ejection - without it, the cylinder disassembles itself across your entryway, and the 11 disc springs are individually sized and must be re-stacked in order. Second, the bolt assembly is under spring tension; improper retraction during removal can launch the bolt into the door cavity, where it wedges against the weatherstripping channel.

We don’t recommend DIY installation on high-security deadbolts. The security value of an Abloy cylinder is voided if the install leaves a 1/8″ gap between door and frame, or if the strike box is surface-mounted instead of mortised.
