Which Medeco Models This Applies To

Medeco deadbolts are not interchangeable across series. Signs Your Medeco Deadbolt Installation Is Failing

• Key catches or requires jiggling at mid-turn. This is almost always sidebar drag caused by pin wear or debris in the M3/Biaxial mechanism. Georgia pollen season pushes fine particulate into keyways; combined with humidity, it forms a paste that abrades the sidebar channel. We see this most in spring, particularly in homes near Kennesaw Mountain where pollen counts spike first.
• Thumb turn rotates but bolt does not retract. The tailpiece has sheared or the actuator cam has cracked. On Medeco deadbolts, the tailpiece is hardened steel but the cam interface is a known wear point after 8-12 years of daily cycling. The fix is cylinder removal and cam replacement - not a full deadbolt swap unless the housing is damaged.
• Bolt extends but does not fully seat in the strike. Door frame shift from seasonal humidity, common in Marietta’s older East Cobb neighborhoods with original pine frames, or strike misalignment from repeated slamming. The deadbolt itself is fine; the geometry is wrong. We check with the door both latched and unlatched to isolate frame flex from hardware failure.
• Key works from one side only. Double-cylinder sets have independent tailpieces; single-cylinder sets can suffer a broken tailpiece on the interior side. On Maxum units, the interior thumb turn assembly is a separate part number (11T0500 series) and we stock it.
• Visible corrosion or pitting on the cylinder face. Medeco uses brass and stainless components, but the cylinder face is plated zinc on older units. Once the plating fails, Marietta’s humidity - averaging 65-70% annually - accelerates corrosion into the keyway. At that point, cylinder replacement is preventive; waiting risks a seized keyway and a drill-out.

DIY or Call Us?

There is nothing dangerous about installing a deadbolt - it is not a spring-loaded garage door or a live electrical panel - but there is plenty that can go wrong subtly. An owner with a sharp chisel and a steady hand can install a deadbolt in a prepped door. Where DIY fails: boring the face hole off-center, which binds the cylinder; failing to deepen the edge bore enough, which leaves the bolt proud of the face; or installing the strike plate with 3/4-inch screws instead of the 2-1/2-inch security screws that reach the framing. A deadbolt is only as good as the door frame it sits in. We have replaced deadbolts in Marietta where the DIY installation looked correct but the bolt cleared the strike by a sixteenth of an inch - enough that a flat tool could slip the latch.
